What is the best time of year for landscaping in Tennessee?

This is an appropriate and commonly asked question in landscaping. While the answer often varies between locations and type of landscaping, in Tennessee the best time of year for trimming is late winter to early spring, as most plant buds are not yet swelling and opening.
Yet, for some types of landscaping, it is best to do in the summer months, as the plants are growing most rapidly. This includes mowing and lawn care, which is a major portion of landscaping in the summer. Retainer walls are also often done in the summer, as it is very difficult to construct a retainer wall in frozen ground.
For other types of landscaping, such as walkways, patios, mulching, and gravel installation, it is not as important of when to construct them, as they can be built or installed most any time of the year.
